KENNEWICK ALLSTARS WIN STATE QUARTERFINALS
TUMWATER, WA
In the quarterfinal game of the Washington state Babe Ruth tournament Tumwater, the Kennewick 14U All Stars beat the South Thurston 14U All Stars 6-5 in seven innings. The Kennewick 14U AllStars will advance to play the Kelso 14U Allstars.
The offense was led by SS Dwight Norwood, 3B Jyamen Cortez, CF Malcolm Slack, and C John Austin Earles.
Steven Blaine was the starting pitcher and picked up his second victory in postseason pitching a complete game.

Kennewick 14U AllStars Win District 2 Championship
In the title game played at Horn Rapids Baseball Complex, the Kennewick 14U All Stars beat the Richland 14U All Stars 14-4 in five innings to wrap up the Babe Ruth District 2 championship. The Kennewick 14U All Stars were undefeated in the tournament, and will now advance to play in the state tournament in Tumwater, WA on July 20-24. The offense was led by, CF Malcolm Slack, C JohnAustin Earles, Jyamen Cortez, and Austin Gardner who ended the game in the bottom of the fifth with a solo homerun.
Dwight Norwood was the starting pitcher, and picked up his first victory in postseason, with Steven Blaine getting the save in 2 innings of relief. JR Zavaleta closed out the game pitching the final inning of relief.

Hotel Accomodations
Dear Parents,
I wanted to post a note on our baseball blog this afternoon. For the most part, everyone is making hotel inquiries on their own about room rates and locations.
But apart from individual arrangements, I have a block of 15 rooms on hold with a Days Inn Hotel in Federal Way. The initial room rate is $74.99 per night for a room with two double beds, and up to four people.
The drive time to Tumwater High School from the Days Inn in Federal Way is 35-45 minutes.
If anyone finds rooms closer with a great rate, please text or email me.

State Tournament Game Schedule / Format
Dear Players & Parents,
I received the schedule and tournament format for the WA state tournament. We play at noon July 20, at Tumwater High School in Tumwater, WA. Our second game is on Thursday July 21 at 6:00pm. Tumwater is near Olympia. And on Friday July 22, we play at noon again.
The summary of the tourney bracket is this...there are 8 teams in the tournament and the first three days of play (Wed thru Friday) determines the pairings or seedings.
On Saturday, the top 6 teams from the preliminary play will move forward and compete for the state championship. Two of the top 6 team get a bye on Saturday morning/noon and do not play until late Saturday afternoon and evening.
So if we play well on pool play Wed thru Sat, we are in a position to earn a BYE in the semifinal round. And only need to win a Saturday nite matchup to be in the state championship on Sunday July 24th.
I have attached the state tourney bracket. And will put out a practice schedule Tuesday evening after work. Our team's strength is that we are very balanced on offense, with pitching depth, team speed, defense & great versatility on our roster.
But we are one of eight teams in Tumwater WA vying for a berth in the regional tournament in Salem, Oregon Aug 1-6.

"Team Unity" Triggers South Carolina's World Series Repeat
Guys,
South Carolina won the 2011 College World Series for the second year in a row. Big news. But what I took away from the article is what their star pitcher said was the key to their victory. The quote that follows is his remark about the key to their success. Team unity.
Here is the quote: "We're not the most talented team, and we don't have the best players position for position," Roth said, "but we go out and stick together as a team We battle. I can't describe it. We're a bunch of average Joes and love each other and come out and battle."
Coach Ben Jacobs' Richland Bombers win state championships with team unity. If we expect to compete deep into the Babe Ruth tournament, and have a shot at advancing beyond the state tournament, team unity will be the key to our success. We have TALENTED players this year on the roster. Plenty of pitching depth, offensive firepower, and guys who can flat out pound the baseball, who pitch and are versatile in playing multiple positions.
The question is can we unify as a team around one SINGLE agenda? As Coach, I am committed to a single agenda...that being our teams success. No distractions, no division.
I’ll do my part to make sure that we compete at the level that our talent allows us to. We start all star practice Tuesday next week. I'm really looking forward to the Tournament!

The Gamecocks are national champions again. Michael Roth pitched 7 2/3 innings on three days' rest and the Gamecocks were in control throughout a 5-2 win over Florida on Tuesday night that completed a two-game sweep in the CWS finals.
"Beginning of the year I said we finished at the old one, so let's try to open the new one up," said second baseman Scott Wingo, voted the CWS' Most Outstanding Player. "Coach wasn't sure we would get it, but I'm the type of guy who felt we were going to do it. I was thinking of the Oregon State team the whole year. I had a feeling we would get back and win this thing, and we did.
"South Carolina (55-14) became the first team to ever go 10-0 in an NCAA tournament and the first since Oregon State in 2007 to go unbeaten in a CWS. The Gamecocks' streaks of 16 NCAA tournament wins and 11 straight in the CWS are both the longest all-time. They became the sixth team to win consecutive national titles and first since Oregon State in 2006-07.

Among pitchers who have worked 30 innings at the CWS, Roth's 1.17 ERA over 38 1/3 innings the past two years ranks second all-time behind Ohio State's Steve Arlin, who had a 0.96 ERA over 47 innings in 1965-66.
Roth came in with a 098 ERA for the season and held Florida without a run after it got leadoff men on base in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
