Tualatin Hills/Mound Time Wins Babe Ruth 14 Year Old World Series

Tualatin Hills/Mound Time won the Babe Ruth 14-Year Old World Series on Friday, defeating host Glen Allen (Va.) 5-4. The visitors from Tualatin Hills broke open a 3-3 tie in the 7th inning with two runs on two wild pitches, a throwing error and a single.

Glen Allen rallied in the bottom of the 7th with a run on two singles and a passed ball, but the game ended when James Armstrong struck out the final Glen Allen batter. Armstrong got the complete-game win for Tualatin Hills.

Tualatin Hills qualified from pool play with a 2-2 record, then on Thursday and Friday swept through three games of the single elimination championship bracket, outscoring its opponents 22-6.

KEIZER — Tualatin Hills Mound Time stunned Kelso, Washington 10-9 on a
walk-off single Saturday by Matt Orcutt to win the 14-year-old Pacific
Northwest Regional Babe Ruth tournament and advance to the World Series.
Orcutt came up to bat with one out in the bottom of the seventh and swung on
the first pitch he saw.

"At first I was a little nervous because I really wanted to win, but I took
a deep breath and the first pitch was right in there, so I took it," said
Orcutt of his game-winning blast that sailed over the center fielders head
to score Ryan Kaser and send his team to nationals.

In a game that saw few lead changes, Tualatin battled back to score six runs
in the final two innings to beat Kelso, the South Washington champs.
Both teams were undefeated in the tournament with a records of 5-0, but only
one team could win this game and represent the Northwest at the national
tournament.

"The kids were a little bit down," said Tualatin Hills coach Paul
Gilbertson, "but we battled back like we have been all season." Last year,
the same team made it to the regionals.

Semifinals set at Babe Ruth Regional - Kelso WA 4-0 Pool Play

KEIZER, OR — Kelso, WA and Mound Time Beaverton, OR are the top two seeds in the 14U Babe Ruth Regional Semifinals. Two local teams are still alive, with a trip to the Babe Ruth World Series two wins away, and they might face each other for that right. At 10 a.m., the Keizer Knights, the No. 2 seed in the American Division, will take on National Division top seed Kelso, Wash. The Salem Steelheads (National No. 2) face Mound Time from Beaverton (American No. 1) at 1 p.m. The winners will play in the 5 p.m. title game, with the champion moving on to the World Series Aug. 20-27 in Glen Allan, Va.

Kalispell (Mont.) 8, Salem 7
Down 8-2, the Steelheads posted five runs in the seventh, but the rally fell short against Kalispell.
Cody Hagopian doubled for Salem.

Kelso (Wash.) 6, Burlington (Wash.) 4
Kelso scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to complete a comeback from a two-run deficit against Burlington.
Kelso finished 4-0 in pool play.

Keizer 19, Casper (Wyo.) 4
Mickey Walker was 4 for 4 to lead a 15-hit attack as the Knights cruised against Casper in five innings.
Keizer blew the game open with 13 runs in the bottom of the fourth. Jacob Wood doubled for the Knights.
Walker's four hits capped an efficient two days at the plate. Including Walker's four hits Thursday, he is a combined 8 for 9 in the past two games.

Mound Time 14, Meridian (Idaho) 4
Mound Time turned a close game into a rout with eight sixth-inning runs in a win against Meridian.
Leading 6-3 in the top of the sixth, Mound Time scored eight times to put the game out of reach.
Mound Time was a perfect 4-0 in pool play.

In the quarterfinal game of the Washington state Babe Ruth tournament Tumwater, the Kennewick 14U All Stars beat the South Thurston 14U All Stars 6-5 in seven innings. The Kennewick 14U AllStars will advance to play the Kelso 14U Allstars.

The offense was led by SS Dwight Norwood, 3B Jyamen Cortez, CF Malcolm Slack, and C John Austin Earles.

Steven Blaine was the starting pitcher and picked up his second victory in postseason pitching a complete game.

In the second game of state tournament play in Tumwater, the Kennewick 14U All Stars beat the Midland 14U All Stars 30-9 in five innings. The Kennewick 14U AllStars will play Centralia on Friday July 22 at noon.

The offense was led by, CF Malcolm Slack, C John Austin Earles, Levi Scantlin, and Nate Newbry.

Steven Blaine was the starting pitcher, and picked up his first victory in postseason, with getting Jose Oliva the save in 2 innings of relief.

Kennewick 14U AllStars Win District 2 Championship

In the title game played at Horn Rapids Baseball Complex, the Kennewick 14U All Stars beat the Richland 14U All Stars 14-4 in five innings to wrap up the Babe Ruth District 2 championship. The Kennewick 14U All Stars were undefeated in the tournament, and will now advance to play in the state tournament in Tumwater, WA on July 20-24. The offense was led by, CF Malcolm Slack, C JohnAustin Earles, Jyamen Cortez, and Austin Gardner who ended the game in the bottom of the fifth with a solo homerun.

Dwight Norwood was the starting pitcher, and picked up his first victory in postseason, with Steven Blaine getting the save in 2 innings of relief. JR Zavaleta closed out the game pitching the final inning of relief.

Hotel Accomodations

Dear Parents,

I wanted to post a note on our baseball blog this afternoon. For the most part, everyone is making hotel inquiries on their own about room rates and locations.

But apart from individual arrangements, I have a block of 15 rooms on hold with a Days Inn Hotel in Federal Way. The initial room rate is $74.99 per night for a room with two double beds, and up to four people.

The drive time to Tumwater High School from the Days Inn in Federal Way is 35-45 minutes.

State Tournament Game Schedule / Format

Dear Players & Parents,

I received the schedule and tournament format for the WA state tournament. We play at noon July 20, at Tumwater High School in Tumwater, WA. Our second game is on Thursday July 21 at 6:00pm. Tumwater is near Olympia. And on Friday July 22, we play at noon again.

The summary of the tourney bracket is this...there are 8 teams in the tournament and the first three days of play (Wed thru Friday) determines the pairings or seedings.

On Saturday, the top 6 teams from the preliminary play will move forward and compete for the state championship. Two of the top 6 team get a bye on Saturday morning/noon and do not play until late Saturday afternoon and evening.

So if we play well on pool play Wed thru Sat, we are in a position to earn a BYE in the semifinal round. And only need to win a Saturday nite matchup to be in the state championship on Sunday July 24th.

I have attached the state tourney bracket. And will put out a practice schedule Tuesday evening after work. Our team's strength is that we are very balanced on offense, with pitching depth, team speed, defense & great versatility on our roster.

But we are one of eight teams in Tumwater WA vying for a berth in the regional tournament in Salem, Oregon Aug 1-6.

"Team Unity" Triggers South Carolina's World Series Repeat

Guys,

South Carolina won the 2011 College World Series for the second year in a row. Big news. But what I took away from the article is what their star pitcher said was the key to their victory. The quote that follows is his remark about the key to their success. Team unity.

Here is the quote: "We're not the most talented team, and we don't have the best players position for position," Roth said, "but we go out and stick together as a team We battle. I can't describe it. We're a bunch of average Joes and love each other and come out and battle."

Coach Ben Jacobs' Richland Bombers win state championships with team unity. If we expect to compete deep into the Babe Ruth tournament, and have a shot at advancing beyond the state tournament, team unity will be the key to our success. We have TALENTED players this year on the roster. Plenty of pitching depth, offensive firepower, and guys who can flat out pound the baseball, who pitch and are versatile in playing multiple positions.

The question is can we unify as a team around one SINGLE agenda? As Coach, I am committed to a single agenda...that being our teams success. No distractions, no division.

I’ll do my part to make sure that we compete at the level that our talent allows us to. We start all star practice Tuesday next week. I'm really looking forward to the Tournament!

OMAHA, Neb. -- South Carolina finished the first College World Series at TD Ameritrade Park the same way it did the last one at Rosenblatt Stadium.

The Gamecocks are national champions again. Michael Roth pitched 7 2/3 innings on three days' rest and the Gamecocks were in control throughout a 5-2 win over Florida on Tuesday night that completed a two-game sweep in the CWS finals.

"Beginning of the year I said we finished at the old one, so let's try to open the new one up," said second baseman Scott Wingo, voted the CWS' Most Outstanding Player. "Coach wasn't sure we would get it, but I'm the type of guy who felt we were going to do it. I was thinking of the Oregon State team the whole year. I had a feeling we would get back and win this thing, and we did.

"South Carolina (55-14) became the first team to ever go 10-0 in an NCAA tournament and the first since Oregon State in 2007 to go unbeaten in a CWS. The Gamecocks' streaks of 16 NCAA tournament wins and 11 straight in the CWS are both the longest all-time. They became the sixth team to win consecutive national titles and first since Oregon State in 2006-07.

Summer All Stars

Dear Players & Parents,

The roster below is the 15 players selected to the 14U All Star team. There is a note in this email for my 15 year old players who were selected to the 15U team. The general news about allstars is as follows:

1. The first practice will be Tuesday next week at Roy Johnson, time to be announced later.
2. The first 14U all star tournament is next Friday/Saturday and will be the district tournament and all games for the 14U will be in Richland at HornRapids Baseball park. I do not know the times yet.
3. The cost of participation is $65 per player from the league. That covers a cap, and jersey. We will settle on while pants as the pant color of choice because its universal.
4. Each player will need to bring a clean copy of a birth certificate.
We will enjoy the 4th of July holiday and start practice next week.
5. The roster selections were made based on securing the best roster filled with pitchers who can play anywhere in the field, and players who can flat out pound the baseball.

There are 15 players in the 14U age group. The 1st attached letter explains my views as a coach. It should give you a clear view of how I manage baseball and what guides me as a coach. Most of your kids have played on my Spring or Fall team. If you or your son ever has a problem, come to me I am an open book, and very accessible.

The last attachment is the tournament schedule. The state tourney for the 14U will be in Lacey, WA just outside of Olympia July 19-24. We will find ways to keep the cost of travel down as we do expect to advance out of the District tourney in Richland.

Parents & Players,

Over the weekend, I put together a baseball blog for past and present players to keep up with AllStar plans, and then baseball plans for late summer, and fall. It’s a place where this years Babe Ruth team can track game results, highlights, etc of their exceptional season. The posts that you see going backward are not in sequence. But going forward the news posted will in fact be coherent. For this week, I have asked Amy Serven to be there with her Camera to take team and individual player photos.

Plug in this week, players and let’s run the table. We have the opportunity to finish 15 and 1 for the season. Let’s push and wrap up the league championship. Maltos Game Adjustments

HERE ARE ADJUSTMENTS WE NEED TO MAKE FOLLOWING OUR GAME AGAINST MALTOS' TEAM WHERE WE STRUGGLED TO HIT FOR POWER, THE CURVEBALL FROM JOSH KUTZKE:

OFFENSE: IN GAME ADJUSTMENT FOR HITTING THE CURVE BALL.

1. MOVE UP IN THE BOX, GIVE YOURSELF THE POSITION YOU NEED TO HIT THE SHARP CURVEBALL.
2. AS A PLAYER, YOU'RE GONNA NEED TO ADJUST YOUR POSITION IN THE BATTERS BOX DEPENDING ON WHAT WE ARE SEEING.

TAKE UP A FORWARD POSITION IN THE BATTERS BOX WHEN FACING AN EXTREMELY SLOW PITCHER. IF HE DOESN'T HAVE A BREAKING BALL OR CHANGEUP YOUR MOVE UP IS TO PREVENT YOU FROM STRIKING OUT, GROUNDING OUT DUE THE FACT THAT HE IS NOT A POWER PITCHER.

TAKE UP A FORWARD POSITION IN THE BATTERS BOX WHEN FACING A FAST PITCHER WHO HAS SEVERAL OFFSPEED PITCHES. THIS POSITION GIVES YOU THE ADJUSTMENT YOU NEED TO HIT THE CURVEBALL. WITH OUR TEAM AND THE QUICK HANDS WE HAVE AN OPPOSING PITCHER WILL NOT, CANNOT THROW THE FASTBALL BY US. AND BY MOVING INTO THE FORWARD POSITION, YOU'll HIT THE PITCHERS OFF SPEED STUFF - SOLID CURVEBALL / SLIDER.

DEFENSIVE ADJUSTMENTS:
1. SUREHANDS.
2. DONT POP THE INFIELD GROUNDER AS PART OF YOUR BALL TRANSFER. HANDS GREET THE BALL AND STAY TOGETHER IN THE PROCESS OF THROWING.
3. BETWEEN INNINGS, INFIELDERS THROW THE BASEBALL. NO LOBBING OF THE BALL BETWEEN INNINGS.

June 17th News

Players & Parents,

Wanted to give a shout out to our team, parents and coaches, and celebrate last night’s win with news of the league’s updated standings. Our two comebacks have been so pivotal due to the fact that it keeps us in the drivers seat for the league championship as you can see from todays updated rankings. Our rankings which provide our team with an upper hand in allstar considerations for whatever that is worth to you, to your son and us as coaches.

Kudos to the players for their resolve and will to win. Everybody has contributed this year to our success. And once again in last night’s comeback, you have 4 to 5 guys who stepped up last night who made a difference – Austin Gardner’s 3 for 3 day and his BOMB to the gap in left to win the game, Kameron, Jose, Trevor, Jayman with BIG timely hits to carry us. And then there are offensive contributions of guys like Dillon, Steven, and Tyler who patiently work themselves into a walk. When they’d hoped to slap a basehit. And yet played a key role in win with patience at the plate. Defensively, you have Jose, Steven, Kameron, making crucial plays in the field. And Trevor leading the way with strong, poised pitching.

In the Richland comeback, and the win against Pasco there was a slightly different cast of heroes in that win. At Richland, Jaden makes a double play in RF that saves the game (one of his two “plays of the year”). And on offense, you have Steven starting our 7th inning rally with a triple, Kameron with a key offensive hit, and Tyler lays down a reluctant bunt to trigger the go ahead run. And John Austin hits a bomb to the LF fence with two men on base to give our pitchers a cushion.

In Pasco, defensively it was the steady pitching, and several key plays made on high flyballs by Jose in LF, and our overall team hitting, and defense that made a difference again.

My take on all star honors is this...their is always too much politics involved in it. And as a team, (players, parents, & coaches) we will make a plan toward the end of the regular season for the continuance of baseball. I am a firm believer that the league should adopt sponsoring two 14 U allstar teams, and a 15U allstar team due to the competiveness of our league, the fact that there are reasonably 26-28 outstanding and equally gifted 14 year old players worthy of the honor. And in picking only 13 to 14, the impression left on players is not right.

In the 15U allstar age group, the league has concerns that they may need two to three 14 year olds to blend with the 15 year old players to field an allstar team. So, from my view the jury is still out on the subject. Let’s have a season ending BBQ Party on or before June 30th, enjoy our players success and take inventory of the wishes of the team.

And while we are doing the baseball gig, one of our players, Octavio Rodriguez is at the White House for the second straight year. I love managing this team. So, thanks to our players for their hustle, and grit.

May 25th Team News

Hey Team,

Great results on the field with our team. They are playing complete baseball, solid pitching, excellent defense, timely and consistent hitting especially with runners on base. Our pitch selection & discipline at the plate is exactly what we wanted to see as coaches. And overall, there is team unity. Our record is 4 wins, 1 loss. Our team batting average is nearly .600, we are scoring an average of 12 runs per game, and we are not allowing the opposing team more than 3 runs per game.

I like our team’s chemistry, our coaches and believe that the guys will contend for the league championship. Hopefully bad weather is behind us. And I will have an update on the shipping of the team caps this afternoon.

Baseball Is In Full Swing!

Our spring season is well underway and our 15U baseball team is on an 11 game win streak.
